For the third time in the past five years, Lexus is the most-dependable automaker by J.D. Power and Associates. The luxury brand topped the rankings in the firm's 2018 Vehicle Dependability Study, which surveys owners of 3-year-old vehicles to gauge how often they've had to take their car in for repairs.
Lexus has long been known for its reliability, and the latest study only confirms that reputation. The brand has topped the J.D. Power rankings in 10 of the past 12 years.

After losing the top rank to Kia the previous year, Lexus has recaptured it for the 2023 J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. In 2019, Lexus held the top spot, but Genesis took its place in 2020. Based on a poll of owners who possessed their cars for three years, the study assessed them on 184 potential issue areas and their general condition currently.
Lexus Continues to Dominate
Lexus had 133 faults for every 100 vehicles, followed by its competitors, Genesis (144) and Kia (152). The industry average was 186, which was higher than the 2022 study's average of 192. This performance by the Japanese company places it at the top for the 22nd time in 27 years.
The most common complaints were about infotainment systems, and mainstream companies beat premium automakers with an average score of 182 to 205. It was because new technology is offered in luxury automobiles.
According to Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power, it is customary in the automotive business to introduce concepts and features by placing them in luxury vehicles first.
Ram, Volvo, and Nissan experienced the most gains this year, with respective point declines of 77, 41, and 35. Land Rover, Lincoln, Audi, Ford, and Tesla all received the lowest scores (273, 259, 252, 248, and 242). For the most victories by a single carmaker, the Toyota C-HR and Lexus RX tied for first place among specific models with 111 points apiece, topping six categories. BMW and General Motors were next with four points each.
