What Type of Electric Vehicles Are There?
As electric vehicles (EVs) become more popular, there are different types to consider. Here's a quick summary of the most common types:
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs)
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) run solely on rechargeable batteries, making them zero-emission vehicles that do not produce any tailpipe emissions or air pollution. They don't have a gasoline engine.
Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs)
Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) have both a gas-powered engine and an electric motor. They can recharge their batteries through regenerative braking, which captures energy that is typically lost during braking and uses it to assist the gasoline engine during acceleration.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs)
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) have larger batteries than traditional hybrids and can be plugged into the grid to recharge. They can operate on electric power alone for several dozen miles before the gas engine takes over, and when the battery is depleted, they function like regular hybrids and can travel using gasoline power.
